BROTHERHOOD
UNDERSTANDING THE BROTHERHOOD
Ever since the inception of the Order of the Arrow in 1915, it was intended that all members should be equal in rank. Brotherhood membership does not provide a specific degree of rank, status, or special honor like that of the Vigil Honor. The Brotherhood is an opportunity for members to reaffirm their belief in the high purposes of the Order. The ceremony is intended as a source of inspiration that motivates Arrowmen to give even greater service to Scouting.
ELIGIBILITY FOR THE BROTHERHOOD
Step #1: Complete the five Challenges for Brotherhood Membership
An Ordeal member may become a Brotherhood member when they have completed the five Challenges of Brotherhood Membership:
-
Memorize the signs of OA Membership
-
Advance in your understanding of the Ordeal
-
The four-principal characters of the Ordeal Ceremony
-
The four tests of the Ordeal
-
The Arrow (as a symbol of leadership)
-
The True Name of the Order of the Arrow
-
-
Serve Your Unit. Retain your registration in Scouting. During a period of at least 6 months, continue and expand service to ones own Troop, Crew, or Ship.
-
Plan for Service in your Lodge. Keep your lodge dues current and participate in the Lodge.
-
Review Your Progress. When you earnestly feel that you have met the four challenges above, write a letter to the Lodge Secretary.
Step #2: Brotherhood Letter
The Brotherhood Letter is a reflection that gives you the chance to show how you’ve grown since your Ordeal and how you live the principles of the Order of the Arrow in your daily life. In this letter, you will explain what the Obligation means to you, describe how you are putting it into action in your unit and personal life, and share how your understanding of the Ordeal has shaped your approach to service. You will also outline your specific plans for continuing to give back and support the Lodge. This letter helps demonstrate your readiness to take the next step as a Brotherhood member.
Step #3: Attend a Brotherhood Ceremony
The final step in sealing your Brotherhood membership is to attend a Brotherhood ceremony at the event you selected in your letter. This ceremony is a meaningful experience where you will reaffirm your commitment to the Obligation and take the next step in your journey as an Arrowman. Be sure to plan ahead and attend one of the available opportunities listed below:
-
April 18 – Camp Tracy (LLD)
-
June 5 – Camp Maple Dell (Ordeal 1)
-
August 21 – Camp Tifie (Ordeal 2)
-
September 12 – Camp Maple Dell (Fall Fellowship)
-
September 25 – Camp Hunt (Ordeal 3)
Attending one of these ceremonies completes your Brotherhood process and recognizes your continued dedication to cheerful service and leadership within the Order of the Arrow.
